the word hope has no weight, i prefer to say faith

haven’t heard a song sung
down the tannoy of the london
underground for a while but 48

new guerrilla billboards went up
as an oud played over the techno we
emptied our banks started writing again

what would we be doing if Black Britain
hadn’t shown us cultural resistance
perhaps still installing locks on our doors

trusting a district judge to know
how it feels to live like this
my parents started going to the movies again

by now everyone i love has been arrested
i keep hiding flags in the pockets of my long coat
every time i think it’s over –

a widowed man with the tremors
appears on the bridge
blowing dust off the chess board
straightening each rook and elephant
