Whenever I’m asked why I’m not doing
something that the rest are all doing
I think of Dummler’s, the long gone
pork butchers on Gateshead high street
which was pelted with bricks and stones
at the outbreak of World War One
by good patriotic folk who thought
the Dummler family were all Huns.
They turned out to be Belgian,
Poor little Belgium and all that.
My great grandmother liked to go
there for saveloy butties in gravy.
It was the detail of her account
that put her at the crime scene too.
